On August 15th, the first class of the English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) course was held at PUCPR. The program is offered by the School of Education and Humanities (EEH) and coordinated by Professor Karina Fernandes. The first meeting was attended by teachers, deans and Agents for Internationalization (AGIs) who aim to be prepared and motivated to teach English subjects, as well as to replicate the same course.
During the class, participants had the opportunity to reflect as a group on the role and importance of EMI at PUCPR. Not only it is enough to teach classes in another language, it is also necessary to prepare teachers and guide them as to the methodologies used and their effectiveness. Throughout the course, it will be discussed about the best teaching strategies for this intercultural environment in which PUCPR is inserted, as well as rethinking the English language as a Lingua Franca, and developing local actions for the improvement and dissemination of EMI in PUCPR.
It is noteworthy that the internationalization of education is a priority for PUCPR – a pioneering private institution in Brazil to offer classes entirely in English – and the educators and students are the protagonists of this process.
